How Community Fruit Harvesting began
The organisation was started by Auckland North Shore resident Di Celliers in 2011. Di noticed that many people had fruit trees in their back yard that they couldn’t or didn’t want to pick and the fruit was falling to the ground and rotting. She couldn’t bear to see good, fresh food go to waste, especially when food prices were so high and many families were struggling to make ends meet.
Di started the first Community Fruit Harvesting group through her church and in her neighbourhood and the initiative grew from there. There are currently groups harvesting and sharing fruit around New Zealand - see Contact Us for details.
